Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy’s (PCP) Nonprofit Organisations’ (NPO) Certification Programme is the first initiative of its kind not only in Pakistan but also in the South Asian region. Developed after considerable brainstorming, review of international best practices and consultations with stakeholders, the programme aims to facilitate credible nonprofit organisations in diversifying their resource base and expanding their programmes for social development.

Certification is a 'seal of good housekeeping', for organisations that exhibit exemplary standards in organisational effectiveness. This is based on an independent and objective evaluation of the NPO in critical areas of internal governance, financial management and programme delivery. The programme seeks to set sector-wide standards and incentivise adoption of ' best practice' in these areas.

Certified organisations are promoted by PCP through its website and databases. This helps donors (individual, corporate, diaspora and international) and the government in identifying credible partners for social development. Certification also forms the basis for the NPOs to claim tax benefits from the Central Board of Revenue (CBR). For those organisations that fail to meet the standards, PCP builds linkages with specialised capacity building organisations that help the NPO build its capacity to meet certification standards.
