Volunteer Service Management

Volunteer services management is a new initiative at PCP. This initiative was taken during the IDP crisis in 2009 and became the starting point for this programme. This new initiative and the test pilot conducted later show that there is huge potential of untapped resources which can be utilised to strengthen the process of social development.

In line with the vision of PCP, “The three sectors of society- business, civil society and the government- work in a strengthened partnership for social development in Pakistan,” PCP can bring in volunteers to utilise their potential and simultaneously build their capacity. It is an accepted reality now that the government cannot deliver alone and neither can civil society work in isolation. Social development needs collaborative efforts. PCP endeavours to facilitate and bring them together on a single platform through this new initiative. It is estimated that volunteering on an average contributes 8-14% of GDP to the economy of a country. According to the National Voluntary Movement report, in Pakistan volunteerism is contributing 5% of GDP in Pakistan.

With increasing focus on volunteerism, its role in social development and community development PCP’s Volunteer Management program which is well within the mandate of the organisation has over 100 volunteers registered online. The first test pilot with the volunteers was initiated in the summer of 2009 during the IDP crisis. The programme involved volunteers in the process of food distribution at relief camps. The volunteers faced some problems in the first test pilot due to their unfamiliarity with the local languages and the prevailing security situation. This however did not stop the volunteers from getting registered with PCP.

A second test pilot was carried out by placing volunteers with a certified civil society organisation for a limited time period. Their activities were monitored and reported back to PCP. The evaluation done by the certified CSO at the end of the term was highly satisfactory, both for the recipient organisation and the volunteers thus paving the way for future placements.

The initiative would be directed at the student community, retired personnel from the civil services as well as the corporate and the CSO sector. Volunteers who wish to be associated with PCP are required to fill an online submission form. PCP registered volunteers will be matched with the needs of organisations requesting volunteer services. All costs will be borne by the recipient CSOs.

The purpose and objective of the volunteer initiative at PCP is to:

“Enhance in-time philanthropy” resulting in increased awareness about philanthropy and about PCP.

Institute a mechanism for time volunteering as a major contribution to social development in Pakistan.
